Cotton is a light, fluffy staple fibre. It grows in a protective case around the seeds of a cotton plant. The fibre is pure cellulose. The plant survives well in tropical and subtropical climate around the world. It is widely found in the Americas, Africa, Egypt and India. The fibre is mostly spun into yarn or thread and is used to make a soft, breathable textile. It is one of the oldest fibres that are used to date.  It was first discovered in the Indus valley civilization and dated back to 6000 BC in Peru. It is the most commonly used natural fibre cloth in clothing industries today. The word 'cotton' has its origin in Arabic and is derived from the Arabic word "qutn or qutun".

Cultivated cotton are perennial shrubs are grown annually. The height of the crop grows around 1-2 high and sometimes even higher. The leaves are broad and lobed with three t five, sometimes even seven lobes. The seeds remain a capsule kind of thing which s known by the term ‘boll'. Many kinds of cotton variety are developed by selective breeding and hybridization. Most of the fashion is made from cotton-like- corduroy, seersucker, twill, socks, t-shirts etc.

Cotton is also used in crochet and knitting. In addition to the cotton industry, cotton is used to make fishing nets, coffee filters, tents, explosives manufacture etc.

Botanical name: Gossypium. Is a genus of flowering plants in the tribe gossypieae of the mallow family, Malvaceae from which cotton is harvested. There are about 50 species of such kinds.

The name of the genus has been derived from the Arabic word goz that refers to a soft substance. It is from the kingdom of Plantae.
